Now, you’re probably wondering what the heck I’m doing holding a straight jacket in my hand. Well, if you didn’t see the previous video to this, you’re probably wondering that. But I’m going to be talking all about the entrepreneurial straight jacket, the straight jacket that, unbeknownst to you, you wound up getting put into. And now you’re kind of bound up, not being able to do what you want, when you want, with whoever you want at a moment’s notice, not having plenty of money to go ahead and do that.
So we’re going to talk about the entrepreneurial straight jacket and how to actually escape from the straight jacket. But I thought for a better effect, I’d go ahead and actually put this baby on, or have my lovely assistant, Sarah, put this on for me. On me, actually. Not for me, so we can get to the next level here.
Yes, this is a real straight jacket. Now, why am I doing this? Well, because the entrepreneurial straight jacket is something we all suffer from. We all, to a varying degree, have locked ourself in a straight jacket and don’t know what to do next. We don’t have the money, time, and freedom that we thought we’d have, yet we’re stuck in a straight jacket.
So how do you get out of that? Because we all eventually get in the straight jacket, eventually we all have to get out of it at some point, right? Either that or you just have to close the doors and walk away from the business. And that’s not really an option, right? You’ve got too many people depending on you: your family, your employees, their families. There’s just too many people depending on you to stay in business and do what you need to do to continue on. But you can’t continue on if you’re wearing a straight jacket all the time, right?
So how do we get out? Well, most entrepreneurs, because … not just for the fact that they thought they knew better than their boss and started their own business, they think they know how to get out of the straight jacket all by themself. And it’s a lot of trial and error, isn’t it? I can struggle around all I want, pull, push, slam myself into the wall, roll around on the ground, and guess what? I’m still in the straight jacket. This baby is meant to confine me and not let me out. And that’s what’s happening with your business. So a lot of entrepreneurs and business owners, they try to get out of it all by themself without any outside help.
And after doing that for a while … I don’t know what stage you’re in … but we all go through this. We try to figure it out on our own, and it doesn’t work. So now we start asking for help. Okay? So as I mentioned earlier, I used to fly all over the world doing this little straight jacket thing on stages. And of course, part of my act was I’d ask the audience members how to get out of a straight jacket. Well, none of them know how to get out of a straight jacket, but they’re willing to give you lots of help or lots of advice, right? So it’s just like you going down to the shop owner down the street and saying, “Hey. I got a problem. How do I fix it?” Well, you don’t realize it, but he’s probably in the straight jacket, too. But he’s more than willing to tell you what to do.
Now, he hasn’t done it before. He hasn’t gotten the results that you’re looking for, that he’s even looking for, but he’s ready, willing, and able to give results. I mean, or give answers. There’s a lot of people out there like that. And I get it, people are … like to be helpful. But just like me asking somebody how to escape from a straight jacket if they’ve never done it before, guess what’s going to happen? I’m not going to get out of this thing. I actually had one guy yell up to me I need to dislocate my shoulder to get out of this thing. I don’t know if that would work, but I’m not about ready to try that. Okay? That sounds like a really, really painful way to get out of a straight jacket.
But that’s what we all do. We ask for help from people that have never been there. They’ve never done it. And we rely on their help. But it’s really … for them, it’s what we call a SWAG. It’s that Scientific Wild-Ass Guess. They don’t have the answer or else they’d have done it already. But because they’re telling you what to do … look, if you’re a good entrepreneur, a good business owner, and ready, willing, and able to try some things, unfortunately, you’re going to try things that are just a guess, and you have no idea.
So my point is, pay attention to who you’re getting your advice from. Okay? Have they been there? Have they done it before? Do they have a proven track record of getting you out of whatever straight-jacket situation that you’re in? Okay? So that’s the lesson for today, is pay attention to who is giving you the information. Try all you want by yourself. Go and ask people for their help. But unless they’ve done it before, chances are, you’re not going to be able to get out of the straight jacket. I’ll see you on the next video.
