Hi shop owners. Welcome to this edition of Car Count Daily. My name is Ron Ipach, but you can call me Captain Car Count, because all I’ve done for the past 20 years is help auto repair shop owners just like you get and then keep all the top quality customers that your shop can handle.
As you can probably tell, I’m not in the office right now, I’m out on a walk. I’m actually getting out to recharge my batteries, because I was having one of those days. You know those days that no matter how hard you work, no matter what you do, you just don’t seem to get anything done. It becomes very frustrating, it becomes very stressful, and then pretty soon, the entire day implodes.
You’ve probably had days like that, probably you have days like that all the time. I’m here to tell you the thing to do to get out of that rut to get into a better situation, is get the hell out of the shop. Just leave, go away for 10 or 15 minutes, or, if you got the right staff in place, get away for an hour. You got to do something different because doing more of the same thing in the same situation you’re in right now is not going to get you better results. You’re stressed, your employees become stressed, your customers become stressed, and pretty soon everything’s starting to implode.
My advice to you today is to get away from the shop, not stay in the shop, don’t plow through it. Sometimes you got to get out, let the sun recharge your batteries. Understand that there’s other things going on, just like all that construction that’s going on right next to where I’m recording this. There’s a lot of other things happening today. Sometimes just getting away, thinking about something totally different allows you to put on a different set of glasses so when you walk back into the shop you see things through a totally different light, okay?
Please, when things seem like they’re all going to hell in a hand basket, just get away and get out and enjoy the day for the next 10, 15 minutes and I promise you, when you get back to the shop, things are going to be perfectly okay and the day’s going to do so much better for you.

Even if I can’t actually drive away from the building, I’ll walk around the perimeter of my property two or three times, try to look at the building and business the way potential customer driving by see it…you know, the big picture.
What usually happens is I gain a sense of pride in what we’ve created with all our hard work over the years. Replacing frustration with pride in one’s achievements is re-energizing at the very least. It doesn’t change what you’ve been struggling with at the moment, but certainly provides new perspective on the big picture and clarity to my goals.

Whacking tennis balls sounds like great stress relief!
